You smell gas, or the carbon monoxide alarm is going off
Get everyone out of the house first. Call the gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside, not from indoors. Don't switch anything on or off on your way out, and don't go back in until the utility says the property is safe. Once it's cleared, call us and we'll take it from there.
No heat during a hard freeze
A house without heat in a freeze can lose pipes as well as comfort. If your thermostat has an Emergency Heat setting, switch to it. Open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, keep a faucet trickling, and call us with the make of the unit if you can see it.
No AC during a heat advisory
Heat is a genuine health risk in a Tidewater August, especially for older adults, small children and anyone on heart or blood pressure medication. Get to a cool room or a cool building, keep drinking water, and call. Tell us if someone in the house is medically vulnerable so we know.
Water pouring out of the air handler, or a wet patch spreading on the ceiling below it
That's usually a blocked condensate drain, and it will keep running until someone stops it. Shut the system off at the thermostat and put a bucket or a towel under the drip. Leaving it running just adds water to your drywall and your insulation.

The AC runs all day and the house still never feels cool
If the equipment is sized right and the duct is sound, the leak is usually the building itself. Single-pane glass, failed seals and doors that don't shut tight let conditioned air out as fast as you can make it. Replace the AC and the bill barely moves, because the new unit is losing air through the same gaps.

Condensers and air handlers want a dedicated circuit at the right size, and older Norfolk and Portsmouth panels often don't have one to spare. Thermostat wiring in a house that's been worked on for fifty years is frequently pieced together. In a crawl space house, the air under your floor is a large part of the air in your house. A wet, open crawl space feeds moisture upward all summer and pulls heat out of the floor all winter. Under an air handler or a duct run, that's usually condensate from a blocked drain or an uninsulated duct sweating in a hot attic. Under a roof plane, it's a roof leak instead. Either way the drywall has to be opened, dried and repaired after the water is stopped, and covering it over before the leak is fixed just hides the damage for a season.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in the winter?
A heat pump makes warm air rather than hot air, so lukewarm at the vent is normal and the house still heats. Genuinely cold air usually means the unit is stuck in a defrost cycle, the reversing valve has failed, or the outdoor unit isn't running at all. If the auxiliary heat light is on and the air is still cold, switch the system off and call. Running electric backup heat for days is expensive and it doesn't repair anything.
Do you work on heat pumps as well as furnaces?
Yes. Heat pumps are common across Hampton Roads because the winters are mild enough for them to work well, so they're a large part of what we see. We handle heat pump repair and replacement, straight AC systems, air handlers, and the dual fuel setups (gas side confirmed separately) where a furnace and a heat pump have to hand off to each other cleanly. Gas work is a separate contractor classification in Virginia and does not travel automatically with HVAC, so tell us if your system is gas and we will confirm who is doing that part before anything is booked.
What should I do if I smell gas or the CO alarm goes off?

My AC is running almost constantly on a hot day. Is that bad?
Not necessarily. On the hottest, wettest afternoons of a Tidewater summer, a correctly sized system is supposed to run nearly nonstop, because it was sized for a normal hot day rather than the worst one of the year. Start worrying when it runs like that and the house still gets warmer, when the air at the vent isn't cold, or when it happens on a mild day in May.
Can you replace a whole system, not just repair one?
Yes. We handle replacement for heat pumps, straight AC systems and air handlers, including the load calculation that decides whether the new one actually performs better than the old one. If your duct is the real bottleneck we'll say so before you spend money on equipment. A bigger unit on bad duct just gets you a louder version of the same problem.

Most homes here run a heat pump rather than a gas furnace, and that changes what normal looks like. A heat pump is your heater and your air conditioner in one system, so one failed part can take out both. It also runs long and steady in winter instead of blasting hot air. Some of what worries people about heat pumps is completely normal. Some of it isn't, and we'll tell you which one you're dealing with.

Why does my heat pump run so much in winter?
Because that's how a heat pump works. It moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it, so on a cold morning it runs long and gentle rather than short and hot. The air from the vents feels lukewarm rather than toasty, and that's normal. What isn't normal is backup electric heat running all day, an outdoor unit iced over for hours without defrosting, or a power bill that jumps with no change in the weather. Heat pumps suit coastal Virginia because the winters are mild enough for them to work well. When one fails it takes your heating and your cooling at the same time, so we treat those calls differently.

What's actually wrong when the AC stops cooling?
Most no-cooling calls come down to four things. A tripped breaker, a filter so clogged it's choking airflow, a frozen evaporator coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. The first two you can check yourself in about five minutes. The other two need gauges and a proper leak search, because topping off refrigerant without finding the leak means paying for the same repair twice. If the coil is iced up, shut the system off and let it thaw before anyone opens it, or the diagnosis will be wrong.

When is a furnace worth repairing instead of replacing?
Age and the price of the failed part usually settle it. A cheap ignitor or a flame sensor on a furnace with years left is an easy call. A failed control board or a cracked heat exchanger on an old unit is a different conversation, and a cracked heat exchanger is a combustion safety issue rather than a comfort one. Plenty of Hampton Roads homes pair a gas furnace with a heat pump, so we look at how the two are set up to hand off to each other, not just the box that stopped working.

Can a bad thermostat make the whole system look broken?
Yes, and it's one of the cheapest fixes in the trade. Dead batteries, a loose wire behind the plate, or the wrong configuration for a heat pump will run expensive backup heat when it shouldn't, or refuse to call for cooling at all. A smart thermostat installed without a C wire drops offline and takes the schedule with it. We check the thermostat and the low voltage wiring before condemning anything expensive, because a fair number of no heat and no cool calls end right there.

Why is upstairs always hotter than downstairs?
Heat rises, and most two-story homes here were built with one system trying to serve both floors. Upstairs gets the longest duct runs, those runs sit in a blistering attic, and everybody is sharing the same blower. It's a real problem with real fixes, and none of them start with turning the thermostat down another two degrees. We measure airflow at the registers first, because that tells us whether the problem is the equipment, the duct, or the return.

Why does the house feel clammy even with the AC running?
Coastal humidity is a separate problem from temperature, and cooling alone doesn't solve it. An oversized AC drops the temperature quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull real moisture out of the air. You end up at 74 degrees and still sticky, with musty closets and condensation on the vents. Sizing, fan settings and sometimes a dedicated dehumidifier fix that. Turning the thermostat lower does not, and it usually makes the short cycling worse.

Where does the cool air go when the vents feel weak?
Often straight into your attic or your crawl space. Duct in unconditioned space leaks at the joints, sags between supports, and pulls apart at the register boot, so air is lost before it ever reaches a room. You pay to cool the crawl space while the back bedroom stays warm. Sealing and re-supporting a duct run is usually cheaper than any equipment upgrade, and it's the first thing we look at when a system is sized correctly but performing badly.

Does an HVAC maintenance visit actually do anything?
It does two things worth paying for. It keeps the coils and the condensate drain clear so the system doesn't quit in the week you need it most, and it catches a weak capacitor or a slow refrigerant leak while it's still a small bill. In this climate a heat pump works close to year round, so it takes more hours of wear than the same unit would somewhere milder. Twice a year is the normal rhythm, once before cooling season and once before heating season.
